JANIE COWAN
Born in Anchorage, Alaska, Janie Cowan grew up in a small and supportive arts community. Ever inspired by the mountains, and looking for something to do in the long dark winters, she started playing the bass at age 11 under the direction of a cellist. She was recruited for bluegrass and irish sessions and, as she kept exploring, began performing with the Anchorage Opera and Symphony, at folk festivals, punk venues, improvising with the local dance company and playing jazz in small cafes. She now attends the Oberlin Music Conservatory where she studies a self written curriculum, "Comtemporary Bass Performance". She revels in acoustic sounds, and is exploring ways of incorperating the double bass and audience interactivity into current technology. back to WAM!
